So, one conversation I have again and again (and again) with entrepreneurs is “how to avoid burnout”.
It’s a serious issue – and it’s something I struggled with for years.
There’s always a TON of stuff on your to-do list. You KNOW it’s a marathon, not a sprint. And yet you STILL can’t stop working yourself into a corner.
Here’s what happens:
You start an exciting new project filled with energy so you work harder than you know is sustainable. You’re putting in 10, 12 even 16 hour days.
And it’s working! You’re smashing your goals, making progress and kicking ass. It feels awesome.
But about three or four weeks into the cycle, reality strikes. Mornings get harder, you procrastinate more, you feel like you’re slipping behind.
And instead of taking those warning signs as a hint to slow down, you jam down the gas down even harder.
You grind that pedal right into the floorboard as you try to sustain your momentum.
And then… BOOM.
You blow up, you burn out or you get sick and you spend the next month achieving basically nothing.
If you’re lucky, you take a week or two out to recover. Then you repeat the whole process like clockwork.
If you’re unlucky (or you work for someone else), zombie-mode becomes your new baseline. You scrape through life until you find time for your next meaningful break.
Sound familiar? Yeh.
I’ve been there, I’ve done that and I’ve watched it happen hundreds of times.
It’s counter-productive. It’s rookie-level energy management. And it sucks.
So what’s the solution? What’s the secret to showing up day-in-day out and making progress week after week after week?
The first thing to realise is that you’re not alone. Literally every entrepreneur struggles with this issue. Millions just like you are going through exactly the same process right now.
The second thing to realise is that it’s not your fault. You weren’t prepared for this at home or at school or in college. And, even now, almost nobody, anywhere talks about energy-management in a way that’s realistic or practical.
And the last thing to realise is that there ARE ways to break out of the cycle. And they’re practical, and they’re powerful and they’re surprisingly easy to implement.
For example, have you discovered the power of tracking your Resting Heart Rate (RHR) and Heart Rate Variability (HRV)? Or have you got a system to balance your A (work), B (planning) and C (recovery) days effectively? Or can you tell saturation from tiredness from fatigue? And do you know why that’s important?
